Kantha. Bengal’s ancient running stitch tradition. Over a thousand years old. Origins traceable to pre-Vedic practice and ancient Buddhist texts. Developed in rural Bengal and Bihar — women of undivided Bengal stitching worn saris into quilts, making something whole from what was worn. The word itself comes from Sanskrit — patched cloth. UNESCO recognised. The running stitch is deceptively simple and demanding in practice. Tension must be consistent from the first stitch to the last. Kantha is rare outside Bengal. It is in-house at SATYA.
Chikankari. Lucknow’s shadow work tradition. Over thirty distinct stitches. Worked from the wrong side of sheer fabric — the shadow appears on the front. The artisan works entirely by feel, never turning the fabric over. The specific stitch that creates the shadow effect is called bakhiya — a herringbone worked in reverse. It requires a quality of attention that cannot be rushed and cannot be faked.
Aari work. The hook needle technique. Used for outlining, filling, vine work, stem work, botanical compositions, and geometric precision work. The aari hook allows a speed and control in fine thread work that no other tool matches.
Zari. Flat metallic gold and silver thread. Used for dense fills, border work, and geometric panel compositions. The thread that has defined Indian ceremonial dress for centuries — now available in contemporary fusions that take it far beyond its traditional context.
Zardozi. Raised dimensional goldwork. Built above the fabric surface. Couture weight. The technique that has historically connected Indian embroidery to the great fashion houses of Europe — because nothing else produces this quality of dimensional metallic work.
Farisha dori. Copper wire couching. One of the most visually distinctive capabilities this Workshop carries. The copper wire is couched along motif edges — it catches light differently from gold or silver thread, reading warm in some lights and deeply tonal in others. Rare. In-house.
Baadla (Mukaish). Fine flattened metallic wire worked through fabric using the aari hook. Couched along motif edges. Gives a printed or embroidered composition a dimensional shimmering outline that cannot be replicated in any other way.
Kut dana. Faceted glass beads, each cut at specific angles to catch and reflect light from multiple directions. Hand-placed in sequence using a fine needle. Used for continuous lines, geometric lattice work, and dimensional field compositions. The faceting is what separates kut dana from ordinary bead work — the light behaviour is entirely different.
Gota patti. Flattened metallic ribbon. Rajasthani tradition. Used for outlining motifs and building dimensional floral forms. The ribbon carries a warmth and weight that thread alone cannot achieve.
Pearl work. White oval pearls laid in continuous lines along borders, plackets, and necklines. The discipline is in the consistency of spacing — pearl work reveals any variation immediately.
Resham. Silk thread work across multiple stitch types — satin stitch, stem stitch, French knot, running stitch, ribbon work. The versatility of resham is what makes it the foundation of almost every composition this Workshop produces.
